QooQ
Thank you, Mr. Oshima, for your easy-to-understand and easy-to-read presentation.
ReplyDeleteAt Shizuoka University, where I attend, there are so many ginkgo trees that there is a shop called Ginkgo, and the smell bothers me every fall.
I like the taste of ginkgo nuts, but I don't like the strong smell of ginkgo nuts.
If there is a way to enjoy delicious ginkgo nuts without the smell, please let me know.
Thank you for your question.
DeleteThe smell of ginkgo is caused by the outer seed coat (the soft outer part). So, the smell is reduced by removing the outer seed coat and drying them well.
I guess we first need to remove the outer coats so can you explain a bit about the way?
ReplyDeleteThe outer seed coat is soft and can be easily removed by hand like dried plums.
DeleteThen, wash them well with water and dry them. We can remove it instinctively.
While the ginkgo fruit is poisonous, the leaves are used as a herbal medicine in China since ancient times. This is because the leaves contain quercetin. Do fruits psrt actually contain compounds that can be used as medicines like quercetin?
ReplyDeleteGinkgo nuts are rich in β-carotene, V.B and V.C. It also contains many types of flavonoids.
DeleteGingko trees are beautiful in autumn, but ginkgo nuts smell bad when they fall from the tree. Why do ginkgo nuts containing methylpyridoxine cause poisoning?
ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with it, so I will cite from NCNP hospital website. (https://www.ncnp.go.jp/hospital/patient/special/epilepsy-column_21.html)
Delete"The cause of ginkgo poisoning is a compound called 4-O-methylpyridoxine, which is found in ginkgo nuts. This is similar in form to vitamin B6 and interferes with the function of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is an enzyme necessary for the production of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. When this function is inhibited, the brain is unable to synthesize GABA, resulting in convulsive seizures similar to epileptic seizures".
Thank you for your presentation.
ReplyDeleteGinkgo nuts are very smelly. Why are they so smelly?
I love ginkgo nuts, but I don't want to pick them up because of that smell.
One theory is that the reason gingko nuts have a foul odor is to prevent them from being eaten up. Many animals avoid eating them, but certain animals (such as raccoon dogs) like to eat them. By narrowing down predators, they can reproduce widely without being eaten up. The stinky smell is the strategy that made the ginkgo the oldest tree that has lived for 200 million years.
DeleteThere is no set proper intake of gingko nuts. The Japan Poison Center reports 7-150 units for children and 40-300 units for adults.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the nice presentation.
ReplyDeleteHow many gingko nuts does a gingko tree produce?
I never paid attention to it because there are so many gingko.
Ginkgo trees are divided into male and female trees, and male trees do not produce gingko nuts. Older female trees produce more gingko nuts than younger ones. So, the number of gingko nuts depends on the tree. I've never counted, but I encourage you to give it a try!
